There are other market towns, a little further away at the edge of the Morvan and on the Nivernais Canal as well as the river Yonne. One of them is
Clamecy which was an important town for floating the tree trunks out of the Morvan national park. The Morvan is a fabulous national park for walking and swimming in it’s many lakes. There is a Museum with all the history of the local area in Clamecy. There are several bars and restaurants.
Coulanges-sur-Yonne (10km) which is on the river and canal and offers a park with swimming, minigolf and a bar: restaurant.
There are other small villages all along the Nivernais where one can walk, swim, picnic and find small bars and restaurants.
Slightly further a field is the medieval town of Vezelay, (30mins) renowned for it’s Basilica dating back to Richard the Lion heart and the crusades. The Cure valley is reputed for it’s dramatic river cliffs, grottes and trogladite caves and there are numerous swimming holes and canoeing.

The vineyards of the Côte d’Or around Dijon and Beaune are about an hour and a halfs drive away. However there are some excellent vineyards nearby… Chablis (45 mins with it’s Sunday morning market), Coulanges-le-vineuse, Irancy and St Bris-le-vineuse. |
